Runway to Real Life: How to Rock Sequins

Sequins aren't just for rock stars or the red carpet.

“The great thing about sequins is I think people have this sort of connotation of it being number one, evening, and incredibly dressy,” said Zee, whose appearance is part of the “Yahoo Your Day” collaboration between “GMA” and Yahoo experts. “But I actually think it's a perfect complement for your daytime wardrobe.”

“Today, I think you could go to any store and find it every price range, in every possible variation,” Zee said of how the fashion of sequins has evolved.

At Bloomingdale’s in New York City, “GMA”’s Zee demonstrated sequins’ everyday versatility by outfitting two real-life professionals in some of the season’s hottest looks.

Zee dressed Angela Sullivan, a marketing executive in New York, in a casual look.

“Here's a camisole, which is a very simple silhouette, and we just did it with some sequins,” Zee said. “And you can do a blazer and wear that to work with a pencil skirt.”

“I mean, it's that easy,” he said. “I think it's about not being afraid, and thinking of it as something as basic as even a black sweater.”

Zee dressed the other real-life professional woman, Kim Kaupe, an entrepreneur and co-founder of New York City-based Zinepak, in an outfit she could transition from day to night.

“She’s wearing a stretch sequined skirt,” Zee said of Kaupe. “Now this may seem a little bit dressy for a lot of women, but I love the idea of pairing it with something easy and casual.”

The “easy and casual” top Zee chose for Sullivan was an oversized sweater, which Zee says is also a big trend on the runway this year.

“I love the contrast,” he said. “And the thing is, she can whip this sweater off and go out at night, so talk about the perfect day-to-night look.”

Here are the specific clothing items as seen on Kaupe and Sullivan. Each item is available either online or in-store at Bloomingdale's.
