Westminster Kennel Club Show: Top 5 Dogs to Look Out For
The top contender is a cousin of Obama's second puppy, Sunny.
-- It's going to be dog-eat-dog at Madison Square Garden today, where more than 2,711 dogs representing 192 breeds and varieties will be competing for various awards at the Westminster Kennel Club Show. But only one pooch will win the top honor, Best in Show, Tuesday night.
That special canine won't be winning any prize money, but there's rich breeding potential and a lifetime of prestige that comes with the title.
A Las Vegas oddsmaker, John Avello of Wynn Las Vegas, has listed odds of different breeds taking the Best in Show title. Here are the top five breeds to look out for, according to his list, and the leading contender for each breed.
1. Portuguese Water Dog, Odds: 4 to 1 - Leading Contender: Matisse
There are more than 20 porties entered, but 3-year-old Matisse is the favorite. Matisse is the top-winning Portuguese Water Dog of all time, with more than 237 best in all breeds awards, according to the Seattle Times. But Best in Show at Westminster has eluded this pooch. Fun fact: Matisse is the cousin of President Obama's second puppy Sunny.
2. Old English Sheepdog, Odds: 6 to 1 - Leading Contender: Swagger
This crowd favorite, officially named Bugaboo's Picture Perfect, is better known as Swagger. He finished second in Westminster's show in 2013. The 3 1/2-year-old is ranked first in his breed and second in all breeds in the U.S., The Patriot-News reported. Only two Old English Sheepdogs have won Best in Show at Westminster, the last back in 1975.
3. Skye Terrier, Odds: 8 to 1 - Leading Contender: Charlie
This terrier might be smaller than Matisse and Swagger, but he's a big contender. The last and only Skye Terrier to win "Best in Show" at Westminster was back in 1969, but Charlie is fresh from winning Best in Show at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship just last month.
4. Bloodhound, Odds: 10 to 1 - Leading Contender: Nathan
This hound is no stranger to winning. Nathan is currently the No. 1 bloodhound, No. 1 hound and No. 10 dog in the country, Dog Show" target="_blank">according to Purina. At just 4 years of age, he’s earned 22 Best in Shows and 78 Hound Group Firsts. Like Charlie, he's also fresh from a recent Best in Show win just last year at the National Dog Show Presented by Purina.
5. Poodle (Standard), Odds: 11 to 1 - Leading Contender: Flame
This poodle, officially named Darwin Hearts on Fire, but better known as Flame, just turned 4 this past Valentine's Day. He recently won the 2014 Poodle Club of America Best of Breed honor. Poodles historically have done well at Westminster, with four Best in Show winners, but the last one was in 1991.
