Yahoo Your Day: How to Choose the Right Red-Hot Lipstick
Red lips are in. Here’s how to choose the best red for you.
-- Red lips are in.
Memorably worn by Old Hollywood screen goddesses, red lips are making a comeback today. Many A-listers, including singer Gwen Stefani, have flaunted a bold red lip shade.
“Good Morning America” sought the help of makeup guru Bobbi Brown, Yahoo Beauty’s editor in chief, to find out the best ways to rock the red.
Brown’s appearance was part of the “Yahoo Your Day” series, a collaboration between “Good Morning America” and experts from Yahoo.
“Red lips are in, especially with the nude face. Sometimes a red lip looks really pretty, and there are ways to choose a red lip that looks good on you,” Brown said.
Here are her tips:
1. Determine your natural lip color. “[A] lot of people think the way to choose a red lip is based on your skin color, and that's a little bit true,” she said. “But what's even more important is choosing a red lip that works with your lip color. Because women don't realize some women have dark lips and some women have pale lips.”
For women whose natural lip is a paler color, the red will be brighter. And for women with darker lips, the lipstick will make the lip darker, she said.
“So you have to make sure that you choose one that's right,” Brown said, adding, “And I really love a little bit of a deeper red when you have darker lips. I think it looks really, really pretty.”
2. Use a matching lip pencil. “If you're going red, you need more than just a lipstick. You need a lipstick and a pencil, or a lipstick and a brush. It's hard just to have the lipstick,” she said.
Brown added that she prefers to apply a red lipstick from the tube, and then use a lip pencil to fill in areas that weren’t covered by the lipstick.
“What I don't like is when women will over line their lip with the red lipstick. It's more modern to really just not see the pencil at all,” she said.
3. Keep the rest of your makeup simple. “You don't want a smoky eye fighting with a red lip,” she said. “Then it's just too much. It's not modern, and it's not fresh, because red lip is a very strong look. When a woman wears a red lip, everybody notices that you're wearing a red lip.”
