Mischievous Dog Opens Fridge, Raids Contents

-- When most dogs go fetch, they probably don’t do it quite like Allie the yellow Lab did.
The 12-year-old yellow Labrador retriever wasn’t hungry, but maybe she was in a mischievous mood when she ransacked the fridge, removing the contents and strewing them all over the kitchen and throughout her owner’s San Luis Obispo, California, home.
The antics of the crafty canine were captured on video that’s now going viral.
Adam Montiel, Allie’s owner, said his girlfriend recently taught the Lab to open a drawer containing doggie toys.
In a Wednesday interview with ABC News, Montiel said he has been noticing lately that the dog has been getting into the fridge but he had never caught her in the act and couldn’t figure out how she was pulling it off.
In a quest for answers, Montiel – who hosts the local radio show “Up & Adam in the Morning” on Q 104.5 radio FM -- rigged a video camera to a kitchen cabinet and left the house. When he came back, he had the answers he was looking for.
The video shows the resourceful dog first tipping over the trash can. Then she slides open the door of the freezer and removes packages. Not satisfied, the determined animal uses her paws and jaws to open the doors of the fridge, removing several other containers.
When Montiel comes back into the kitchen, his reaction to the scene is a stunned “Oh.”
Montiel said his jaw dropped when he watched the video and saw the systematic sacking of the refrigerator.
“Yeah, I watched it and I was like ‘I couldn’t believe it,’” he said.
Allie’s haul included a package of tortillas, a package of raw chicken and dog treats. Fully expecting that his dog would do what she did, Montiel said he made sure nothing harmful would be within her reach.
Montiel says Allie never misbehaves like this when he’s at home, and when he’s away, he usually leaves her in his room where she has everything she needs. It’s only when he has slipped up and forgotten to lock the door that she’s able to get out and wreak havoc.
After watching the video, which he recorded last month, he says he’s made a point to monitor Allie and lock his room door when he’s not at home.
He said Allie knows she’s not allowed to do what she did.
“Some people say, ‘Oh, dogs don’t know shame’; they are wrong. This dog knows exactly what she did,” he said.
After his girlfriend and other friends urged him to share the video, he posted it to YouTube, where it had racked up more than 1.2 million views as of Wednesday night.
“I can’t even believe that,” Montiel said of the reaction to the video. “When I saw it get to a million, I was like, ‘That’s unreal. I mean, crazy.’”
