Nurse Resigns by Sending 'I Quit' Cake to Her Employer
The frustrated nurse wrote her "official notice" in frosting.
-- A Washington state woman delivered a cake to her former employer after she quit her job as a nurse, writing out an official resignation notice and signing it with thick black frosting.
Sara Childers worked at Forensics Ward 2 of the Western State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Lakewood, Washington, according to ABC Seattle affiliate KOMO-TV.
She resigned last week after working at the hospital for seven months, but sent the cake to her co-workers as goodbye, KOMO-TV reported.
"Western State Hospital: I QUIT!!!" Childers scribbled in icing across the top of the sheet cake adding, "Official Notice," and the date.
She then signed her name on the bottom of her resignation cake.
Above the confectionery "Official Notice," Childers showed her solidarity to her former colleagues, by writing "Forensics 2 Swing Shift: I [Heart] you!"
Childers left the hospital out of frustration with the bureaucracy and management that "will not allow it to be successful,” she told ABC News today, though adding that such issues extend beyond this one facility.
"This is not entirely all of Western State Hospital’s fault,” she said. “This is a community problem, a statewide problem and a cultural problem. Mental illness is extremely stigmatized."
Childers says she still hopes to make a difference. "By leaving Western, I will be able to focus more on my nonprofit group, which is active in the community and making a much larger impact in the mental health field."
As for the target of her criticism, a hospital spokeswoman told ABC News today, “This was quite likely the most unique ‘letter’ of resignation ever submitted to Western State Hospital. Meanwhile, we thank the 2,000 dedicated staff members who do come to work day and night because they find it both challenging and rewarding to help our patients on their journey to recovery.”
