Here's where the 2024 presidential candidates stand on foreign policy
The Russia- Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars are key issues.
Foreign policy is front and center of the 2024 presidential race as tensions remain high in various parts of the world.
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump offer starkly different views on the Russia-Ukraine war and the war between Israel and Hamas.
Here’s a brief look at where the major candidates stand on the issue.
Kamala Harris
Harris has, so far, adopted much of President Joe Biden’s foreign policy stances.
She’s expressed support for aiding Ukraine as it continues to fight against Russia’s invasion. She said as president, she would stand with Ukraine and continue work to strengthen NATO.
On the Israel-Hamas war, Harris has toed the line between support for Israel’s security and right to defend itself with sympathy for the plight of civilians suffering in Gaza. She’s called for a cease-fire with hostages returned, stating she is working around the clock with President Biden to secure such a deal.
She's also pledged to "never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to protect U.S. forces and interests from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups."
She has not, however, released a detailed proposal for her approach to China, the Indo-Pacific or North Korea.
Notably, in her nomination acceptance speech, Harris vowed as commander-in-chief, she would “ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world.”
Donald Trump
Trump has repeatedly touted his relationship with authoritarian leaders like Russia's Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump has claimed he can end the Ukraine-Russia war in 24 hours by bringing the two countries' leaders together, though he has not said how he would do so. He's also said he would cut back U.S. aid to Kyiv and continues to criticize NATO allies and European partners, who he says are not paying enough.
The former president also said both the Ukraine-Russia war and the Israel-Hamas war would have "never happened" if he was president.
On Israel, Trump called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to quickly bring an end to the conflict but said they have to "finish what they started."
He's also pitched the U.S. building a similar air defense system to Israel's Iron Dome.
