The news, which was initially reported by Bloomberg News, said Wintour is among a handful of top Obama financiers interested in the position.

Wintour who has served as editor-in-chief for Vogue magazine since 1988 knows fashion, having begun her career in the fashion department at Harpers & Queen in London in 1970.

Wintour's signature bob haircut, dark sunglasses and fashion sense has thrust her into fashion icon status.

Vogue spokeswoman Megan Salt would neither confirm nor deny whether Wintour has been approached about a diplomatic job, or whether she'd consider it, telling ABC News that Wintour is "very happy with her current job."

Rumors of an official post for Wintour have swirled for months, as the position has become a choice presidential reward for elite political supporters. The Vogue editor, who is an avid Obama supporter, has hosted high-profile fundraisers for the president, raising over $500,000 for his re-election.
