Sneak Peek: Woman Enough To Be President?
July 17, 2007— -- In a set of comments destined for Wednesday morning television, Elizabeth Edwards has mixed it up (once again) with Hillary Clinton.
"Look, I'm sympathetic," Elizabeth Edwards said of Hillary Clinton to Salon, "because when I worked as a lawyer, I was the only woman in these rooms, too, and you want to reassure them you're as good as a man. And sometimes you feel you have to behave as a man and not talk about women's issues." LINK
Elizabeth is not the only member of the Edwards family with a head-turning interview.
"I think the President and the Vice President have engaged in illegal behavior," Edwards tells The Rachel Maddow Show in a pre-taped interview set to air Tuesday at 6:00 pm ET. "And there are multiple examples; just one is the fact that they have illegally spied on the American people in blatant disregard for the law. So, do I think they have engaged in illegal behavior? I do . . ."
Despite his belief that Bush and Cheney have engaged in "multiple" forms of "illegal behavior," Edwards does not favor impeachment.
He prefers to focus on "universal healthcare and winning the next election."
Edwards' poverty tour heads to Wise, Va., Wednesday before heading to Kentucky for a forum in Whitesburg and a speech in Prestonburg. To end his day, the former senator joins his wife for a 7:00 pm ET concert starring bluegrass musician Ralph Stanley in Roanoke, VA.
Not ceding an inch to Edwards on the plight of the poor, Barack Obama delivers 10:00 am ET remarks Wednesday at THEARC in Washington, DC on "Changing the Odds for Urban America".
"You know what we need to do," Obama said Tuesday in a preview of his Wednesday remarks. "We need to provide families with the support they need to raise their children. We need to invest in job training. We need to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, we need to raise the minimum wage, and make it a living wage. We also need to create more affordable housing in this country. . . As president I'll create a housing trust fund that will create over 100,000 new units of affordable housing, and Ill do more to protect home owners from predatory practices that have led to record foreclosure rates all across the nation and here in Washington, D.C."
One thing Obama would not do on Tuesday while picking up the endorsement of D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is identify what he found "disturbing" about Bill Clinton's policies in a 1996 interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
"I'm not going to re-litigate what happened back in the 90s," Obama told ABC News. "I'm talking about what's going to be happening going forward. Bill Clinton isn't on the ballot . . ."
As for the Clinton whose name will be on the ballot, Hillary Clinton tends to Senate business Wednesday.
As for the Republican 08ers, Rudy Giuliani travels to Iowa holding public events in Council Bluffs, Sloan, Le Mars, and Sioux City, Iowa. His campaign opens two new offices in the Palmetto State on Wednesday.
Mitt Romney delivers 7:00 pm ET remarks at the El Paso County Lincoln Day Dinner in Colorado Springs while his wife Ann attends a luncheon hosted by former Governor Jim Edwards and his wife. Ann Romney also attends a 4:30 pm ET reception in Sun City and another reception at 6:30 pm in Hilton Head Island.
Fred Thompson holds a 4:30 pm ET fundraiser at the Hilton Capital Hotel in Baton Rouge while the man he backed in 2000 -- John McCain -- tends to his Senate business in Washington, DC.
Tom Tancredo has a 5:30 pm ET "town hall" meeting in Waterloo, Iowa.
On Capitol Hill, an unsuccessful cloture vote is expected Wednesday on the Levin-Reed amendment which would force the drawdown of all U.S. combat troops in Iraq by April 30, 2008, and transition the remaining American troops to force protection, counterterrorism, training Iraqi security, and patrolling Iraq's borders. Over on the House side, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer briefs the media on fiscal responsibility at 11:30 am ET. He is joined by members of the Blue Dog coalition.
For his part, President Bush tours Man & Machine, Inc. ("The Home of Cool Keyboards and Mice") in Landover, Md., at 10:45 am ET. The first lady participates in the Cooper-Hewitt National design awards in the East Room of the White House at 10:45 am ET.
