The daughter of a Sandy Hook victim was among those to condemn the remark.
-- Donald Trump is under fire on social media after suggesting "nothing" can be done to stop Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's Supreme Court picks except "maybe" the "Second Amendment people."
"Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment,” the Republican presidential nominee said during a campaign stop at North Carolina University. "... If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks."
He continued, "Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know."
Robby Mook, campaign manager for Clinton, released a statement, saying: "A person seeking to be the president of the United States should not suggest violence in any way."
The Trump campaign insisted the candidate's words referred to the power of "Second Amendment people" to unify.
Other big names chimed in on Twitter:
Erica Smegielski, daughter of the late Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung, posed a question to Trump: "you think gun violence is a joke?"
Garry Kasparov, chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, fired off a series of tweets.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren also hit at Trump.
And more added their voices:
The National Rifle Association (NRA) defended Trump and called on people to vote come Election Day.
