Why the state is significant:
The Aloha State is largely left leaning. Hawaii’s governor, U.S. senator and U.S. representatives are all Democrats. In the 2008 and 2012 general election, Barack Obama, who was born there, won over 70 percent of the vote in Hawaii.
Hawaii also has a large Asian population accounting for close to 40 percent of voters in the island state.
