Why the state is significant:

  • The Aloha State is largely left leaning. Hawaii’s governor, U.S. senator and U.S. representatives are all Democrats. In the 2008 and 2012 general election, Barack Obama, who was born there, won over 70 percent of the vote in Hawaii.
  • Hawaii also has a large Asian population accounting for close to 40 percent of voters in the island state.
  • Fast facts:

  • Donald Trump won the Republican caucuses defeating Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Trump came away with 11 delegates and Cruz won 7.
  • Hawaii had the lowest voter turnout of all 50 states for the 2012 election. Only 44.5 percent of the state’s population participated in general election voting.
