Why the state is significant:

  • Since 1992, Maine has voted Democratic, but before then the Pine Tree State had voted Republican in five elections.
  • Maine and Nebraska are the only two states that don’t use the “winner take all” system, instead the winner of the popular vote gets two electoral votes, and another is assigned to the winner of each of Maine’s two congressional districts.
  • Fast facts:

  • In the last six elections Maine has voted Democratic, picking current president Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.
  • During the 2016 primary season, Maine Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican who has frequently been a lightening rod for controversy, endorsed Donald Trump.
