Members of Congress Make Friendly College Football Wagers
Like the rest of the country, members of Congress get into college football.
— -- For college football fans, it’s the most wonderful time of the year: the start of bowl season. Members of Congress are getting in on the fun, with some making friendly wagers with representatives of their team’s rival state.
Roll Call gathered some of the matchups.
MUSIC CITY BOWL (DEC. 30 - LOUISVILLE VS TEXAS A&M) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t officially wagered anything against his Texas counterparts in the Senate (Ted Cruz and John Cornyn) but he did say at his year-end press conference that he’d be at the game.
CITRUS BOWL (JAN. 1 – MICHIGAN VS FLORIDA)Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) is putting up a spread from Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) is betting some famous key lime pies from Bob Roth’s New River Groves in Davie, Florida.
ALAMO BOWL (JAN. 2 – OREGON VS TCU) This bet is between Reps. Roger Williams (R-TX) and Ryan Zinke (R-MT) who were athletes at TCU and Oregon, respectively. Williams is betting Texas-style barbecue that his Horned Frogs will prevail, while Zinke said he’ll treat Williams to a bison burger if his Ducks win.
