Why The State Is Significant:

  • New Mexico is almost evenly divided, voting Republican 12 times and Democratic 14 times in 26 presidential elections.
  • The Land of Enchantment has a nearly perfect record of backing the general election winner, getting it wrong only twice in the last ten contests: 1976 and 2000.
  • In 2004, efforts to register new Democrats caused a significant rise in voter turnout.
  • 2012 Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, lost the Land of Enchantment to then presidential incumbent Barack Obama. Romney’s loss was in large part because of his remarks on immigration, the Hispanic voter turnout decreased from 41 percent in 2008 to 37 percent.
