Minnesota 2024 primary results: Biden, Trump projected to win

Biden challenger Dean Phillips represents part of the state.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will win their respective Minnesota Democratic and Republican primaries, ABC News projects based on analysis of the vote.

As of around 9:45 p.m. EST, with 18% of the expected vote reporting, Trump leads with 69% of the vote, followed by Nikki Haley with 29%.

The "uncommitted" vote, which earned over 100,000 tallies last week in Michigan's Democratic primary, received tens of thousands of votes Tuesday night in Minnesota -- enough to garner nearly 20% of the share so far in the state's Democratic primary, with 66% of the vote reporting. Nearly 45,000 votes have been cast for "uncommitted," according to ABC News.

Activists, including Jaylani Hussein, who spoke to ABC's Linsey Davis before polls closed, said he worked quickly over the last week to rally support for an "uncommitted" protest vote over President Biden's Israel policy.

Though several other Super Tuesday states had an "uncommitted" choice on their Democratic primary ballots, the protest vote has gotten the most traction in Minnesota, which has a large Muslim community and a progressive history.

As polls closed in Minnesota, Rep. Dean Phillips -- who is mounting a long shot Democratic primary campaign against Biden and currently represents the state's 3rd Congressional District -- was on a flight from the state to Washington, D.C.

"Congratulations to Joe Biden, Uncommitted, Marianne Williamson, and Nikki Haley for demonstrating more appeal to Democratic Party loyalists than me," he said on social media from the air.

In a statement to ABC News, he said he plans to reevaluate his next steps on how he can best prevent Trump from winning.

"I'll be assessing tonight's results and all available data over the coming days before making a decision about how I can best help prevent that tragedy," he said.

The state primary for U.S. representatives and other seats will be on Aug. 13.

Early in-person voting in the Minnesota presidential primary opened on Feb. 19 and closed on Monday. Absentee ballots sent by mail must be received by Election Day to be counted, according to Minnesota officials.

State significance

The 39 Republican delegates in the state will be allocated proportionally unless one candidate gets above 80% of the vote, according to the Republican National Committee -- potentially giving multiple candidates a chance to pick up delegates.

On the Democratic side, there are 79 delegates to be won.
