President Obama Mourns Death of 'Creative Icon' Prince

The music legend died today at his Minnesota home.

"Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer," Obama said in a statement released by the White House.

The president said that few artists have influenced popular music "more distinctly" or "touched quite so many people with their talent" as Prince did.

He recalled how Prince once said, "A strong spirit transcends rules," and that he felt "nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative."

Obama said he and Michelle are keeping Prince's family, his band, and all who loved him in their thoughts and prayers.
