Feb. 15, 2011 -- President Obama and the Republican leadership have released their proposed budgets for 2012 and neither addresses Medicare or Social Security, which make up about 40 percent of government spending.
Obama's $3.73 trillion budget focuses on cutting discretionary spending by reducing or eliminating funding for everything from Pell Grants to farm subsidies. The plan claims to reduce spending by $1.1 trillion over the next decade.
The GOP's proposal claims to cut $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years through more wide-ranging cuts in discretionary spending that would affect railroads, public broadcasting, energy research and many other programs.
