Senate Women Rule Capitol Hill At Post-Blizzard Session
Sen. Lisa Murkowski said the all-female sesion was "genuinely fabulous."
-- Who run the Senate floor? Girls.
At least, that was the answer Tuesday morning, as Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) found themselves the only members on the Senate floor, surrounded by an all-female cadre of pages and clerks.
The two women legislators were there to attend to some administrative business: Collins was presiding over the Senate as Murkowski went through some procedural niceties needed to delay Senate business until Wednesday, when most senators were returning to Washington DC for the week’s first votes.
“As we convene this morning, and look around the chamber… the presiding officer is female,” Murkowski began. “Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female,” she continued, looking around her in mock surprise.
“Now, this was not orchestrated in any way, shape or form. We came in this morning and thought, something is different this morning. Different in a good way, I might add,” she said.
“But something is genuinely different and I think it’s genuinely fabulous.”
The Secretary of the Senate has not responded to an inquiry as to whether this all-gentlewoman session was the first in Senate history.
