Tim Kaine Nominated as Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate
Hillary Clinton announced him as her running mate last week.
PHILADELPHIA — -- The Democratic National Convention formally nominated Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as the party's vice presidential candidate by acclamation this afternoon.
When Kaine's name was mentioned by the convention chair for the first time, members of the Virginia delegation cheered, waving their arms and chanting "Kaine! Kaine!"
Some boos could also be heard from the floor but not nearly enough to stop the nomination.
Despite rumblings that delegates supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders would try to derail Kaine's nomination, no one else garnered the 300 signatures necessary to have his or her name placed into nomination. Convention chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge confirmed that Kaine was the only person submitted for nomination.
Kaine was announced as Clinton's running mate on Friday, and he has been spotted at the Wells Fargo Arena during the convention this week. He is slated to address the crowd this evening.
Clinton was also nominated by acclamation — a voice vote from the convention floor instead of the traditional roll call vote — yesterday in a motion made by her formal rival Sanders, but it came after a full roll call vote, and the roll call tally will still be recorded in the official record.
