The District of Columbia earned three electoral votes in general elections after passage of the 23rd Amendment in 1961. Residents of the nation’s capital have voted Democratic in general elections since 1964, never backing a Republican candidate. The nation’s capital has a large number of Democratic voters, nearly 75 percent, compared to 19 percent independent voters and over six percent of Republican voters.
