Sawyer to Interview 'Millionaire' Scammers

May 1, 2003 -- It was a game show scandal that rocked Britain: A trio almost got away with a million-dollar robbery on national television.

Diane Sawyer interviews three people who conspired to cheat the system and run away with the $1.5 million grand prize on Britain's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire The special two-hour edition of Primetime Thursday airs May 8 at 9 p.m. ET.

For the first time, Maj. Charles Ingram, his wife, Diana, and Tecwen Whittock speak together about how they almost got away with the brazen plan — using well-timed coughs to indicate correct answers.

In March, the Ingrams and Whittock were found guilty in a British court, given fines and suspended sentences.

ABCNEWS has secured the exclusive U.S. rights to the British documentary Millionaire: A Major Fraud, portions of which will air — in addition to the interviews — during Primetime.

The documentary about the scandal, narrated and produced by British journalist Martin Bashir, was the highest-rated nonfiction program in the United Kingdom since Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. It was seen by some 17 million viewers — almost 56 percent of those watching television in the United Kingdom — when it aired earlier this month.
