Bettis could play vs. Chargers

— -- Pittsburgh Steelers : Jerome Bettis, the No. 5 rusher in NFL history, could play Monday night for the first time since injuring a calf during the third of the Steelers' four exhibition games. He has moved ahead of Duce Staley on the depth chart, partly because Staley hasn't carried the ball since the playoffs in January. Cleveland Browns : Rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards remained hospitalized Sunday following surgery to treat an infection in his right arm. Edwards practiced all week and was not listed on the team's injury report for Cleveland's game against the Bears. Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said the first-round draft pick took part in the team's walkthrough Saturday. Afterward, Edwards, who had cuts and scrapes on his arm, noticed that it was swollen and showed team doctors, who admitted him to the Cleveland Clinic. Edwards underwent a surgical procedure Saturday night to have the infection cleaned out, Bonsiewicz said. It was not immediately known if Edwards has a staph infection. Edwards didn't mention any problems with his arm to reporters last week. He wore a protective sleeve over his elbow during practice. Green Bay Packers : Running back Ahman Green was inactive with a thigh tendon injury and Najeh Davenport made his second career start for the Packers. Also, center Mike Flanagan (hernia) and linebacker Na'il Diggs (knee) were among the inactives against New Orleans. Scott Wells replaced Flanagan, who had abdominal surgery Wednesday, and rookie Roy Manning, an undrafted free agent from Michigan, replaced Diggs. The Saints were also without wide receiver Joe Horn (hamstring), who was replaced by Az-Zahir Hakim, and cornerback Fakhir Brown (knee) was replaced by Jason Craft. Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Cornerback Ronde Barber inadvertently punched umpire Butch Hannah in the eye when he swung at Jets center Kevin Mawae during an altercation in the second quarter of their game. After the Jets got the ball on the Buccaneers' 8 on Ty Law's second interception of the season, Curtis Martin rushed for 3 yards. After the play, Mawae and Barber got into it. While the two were yelling at each other, Barber took a swing at Mawae with his right hand -- but missed and landed a punch to Hannah's right eye. Hannah was sent sprawling to the field, holding his face, but he got up quickly. Hannah appeared to be OK and stayed in the game but was rubbing the eye afterward. Barber was flagged for unnecessary roughness but not ejected, giving the Jets the ball on the 2. Martin ran it in on the next play for his first touchdown of the season, giving New York a 7-6 lead with 7:32 left in the half. "It was two guys with their triple testosterone running high, acting like idiots," Barber said. "I'm a feisty dude and he's a feisty dude." New York Jets : Jets backup running back Derrick Blaylock is out for the year after breaking his foot against the Buccaneers. Blaylock had three carries for 1 yard and one catch for 3 yards in the game. It was unclear when he got hurt, and coach Herman Edwards was unsure which foot was broken. The Jets signed Blaylock to back up Curtis Martin after LaMont Jordan left for the Raiders as a free agent. Blaylock spent the first four seasons of his career in Kansas City as the backup to Priest Holmes. In five games this season, Blaylock had 10 carries for 19 yards. Rookie Cedric Houston is the only other running back on the Jets roster. Martin has also been banged up, playing with a sore knee since the second week of the season. Atlanta Falcons : Linebacker Edgerton Hartwell may be lost for the season with a foot injury he suffered Sunday, according to Falcons coach Jim Mora. Mora said backup cornerback Chris Cash also may be out for the year with an arm injury. Mora said he would be surprised if either player returns this season. "When they take them into the locker room right way, it doesn't look good," Mora said. "I would say that they are both probably done unless we get divine intervention." Hartwell was carted off the field in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter with a right foot injury. Hartwell returned to the sideline midway through the quarter, walking on crutches with his foot in a brace. The middle linebacker, signed as a free agent in the offseason, has started every game for the Falcons. He had 27 tackles and a pass deflection in the first four games. Cash left in the fourth quarter and was immediately taken to the locker room. In the second quarter, Atlanta defensive end Patrick Kerney was taken to the locker room with an oblique (side) injury, but he was able to return for the second half. Buffalo Bills : Backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb started in place of J.P. Losman against the Dolphins. It was Holcomb's first start since last January for Cleveland in the Browns' season-ending 22-14 win against Houston. Signed by the Bills as a free agent in March, Holcomb is 4-9 in 13 career starts over nine years. The Bills (1-3) have lost three straight and Losman struggled in each game. Holcomb was 5-of-9 for 27 yards passing and lost a fumble in four series replacing Losman. While receivers Eric Moulds and Lee Evans said Thursday that Holcomb would start, but coach Mike Mularkey refused to discuss whether he was making a change. The Bills remained secretive right right up until game time when Holcomb took the field for the opening play. Bills honor Thomas: The Bills honored former running back Thurman Thomas as the 22nd member of the team's Wall of Fame. Thomas was inducted in a halftime ceremony during the Bills' game against the Dolphins. "It's something special," Thomas said. "It lets me know that I did something right for the organization." Selected in the second-round of the 1988 draft out of Oklahoma State, Thomas spent 12 seasons with the Bills, leaving in 2000 as the team's all-time leader in rushing yards (11,938), rushing touchdowns (65) and carries (2,849). Thomas ascended to the Wall during a Bills game against the arch-rival Dolphins, who Thomas often victimized during his career. In his performance in the 1991 season opener, for instance, he gained 268 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns. In the 1995 AFC wild-card game, Thomas ran roughshod over the Dolphins defense, rushing for 158 yards and a touchdown in the win. Thomas, who was the league's MVP in 1991, played a major part on Buffalo's four consecutive AFC championship teams in the early '90s. He also went to five Pro Bowls and rushed for over 1,000 yards in eight consecutive seasons from 1989-96. Thomas finished his career by playing one season with the Dolphins before signing a one-day contract with Buffalo in order to retire as a Bill. Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. presented Thomas with a new car. Former teammates Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith and Andre Reed, among others, joined Thomas at midfield for the ceremony. Seattle Seahawks : Strong safety Michael Boulware was removed from the field on a stretcher midway through the second quarter after hurting his lower back. He was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays. "The scans and X-rays were negative," coach Mike Holmgren said. Boulware, a second-round draft pick in the 2004 draft, was down for several minutes after Rams guard Tom Nutten blocked him and then fell on him with 7:08 to go. Miami Dolphins : Backup linebacker Eddie Moore hurt his knee against Buffalo and will have further tests this week to determine the extent of the injury. It's not clear when Moore was hurt, but he was not able to finish Miami's 20-14 loss to Buffalo. Coach Nick Saban said he would await the test results before commenting. Saban also did not provide an update on backup cornerback Eddie Jackson, who did not return after hurting his hamstring. Receiver David Boston was held out after his knee began swelling earlier this week. He had been listed as probable after being added to the injury report on Friday. Cincinnati Bengals : Receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh was inactive against the Jaguars because of a hand injury. Houshmandzadeh, the team's second-leading receiver behind Chad Johnson, has 20 catches for 248 yards and a touchdown this season. He injured his hand last week against Houston, when he caught eight passes for 105 yards. Kelley Washington was scheduled to start in his place. Safety Madieu Williams was also inactive because of a shoulder injury. Starting center Rich Braham (knee) was active but was not in the starting lineup. He was replaced by Eric Ghiaciuc. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
