LSU lands women's basketball transfer Angel Reese

Former Maryland star Angel Reese is transferring to LSU, the school announced Friday.

Reese was the No. 1 player in ESPN's unsigned transfer rankings after leading the Terps in scoring (17.8 PPG) and rebounding (10.6 RPG) as a sophomore in 2021-22, marking a huge get for second-year LSU coach Kim Mulkey. Mulkey, who won three national titles in her two decades at Baylor before taking the reins in Baton Rouge, was named AP coach of the year after turning around an LSU program that had won just nine games the season before she arrived.

In addition to Reese, a 6-foot-3 guard/forward, Mulkey added three other transfers ( Jasmine Carson from West Virginia, LaDazhia Williams from Missouri and Kateri Poole from Ohio State), as well as a strong freshmen class headlined by McDonald's All-American Flau'jae Johnson.

After suffering a foot injury that hindered her freshman season, Reese, the No. 2 recruit from the class of 2020, excelled during a tumultuous season in College Park, earning Associated Press All-America Third Team honors as well as spots on the First Team All-Big 10 and Defensive All-Big 10 teams.

"Angel is coming to Baton Rouge as one of the most dynamic players in the country," Mulkey said in a release. "She's an outstanding scorer with a knack for rebounding that will make an immediate impact in our frontcourt. I'm excited to get Angel on campus this summer and get to work!"

"I chose LSU and Kim Mulkey because of the winning culture," Reese added. "I trust in Coach Kim and her staff to help develop me into the player I need to be for the next level. Her résumé speaks for itself and I want to continue that here at LSU. The relationships I've built here, especially with the team are so special and we are ready to work! Let's Geaux Tigers!"

The Tigers, who fell to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament earlier this year, are trying to reload following the departure of the majority of their major contributors from last season, including WNBA draft picks Khayla Pointer and Faustine Aifuwa, who were selected No. 13 and No. 35, respectively, by the Las Vegas Aces before being waived.
