PGA Championship Round 2 grades

— -- My board had several notable honors students on Friday. Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and Jim Furyk all put forth steady performances in the second round and showed why they want to win this PGA Championship.

These players will provide an exciting weekend of golf: a weekend that will not include Tiger Woods, who shot his second consecutive 74 on Friday to miss the cut by 5 shots.

Rory McIlroy    World Ranking: No. 1 | Scores: 66-67

Adam Scott    World Ranking: No. 2 | Scores: 71-69

The No. 2-ranked player in the world is in the middle of the pack after a 2-under 69 on Friday. Seven back of McIlroy's 9-under lead, he will need two very good rounds over the weekend to earn his third top-10 of the year in the majors.

Sergio Garcia    World Ranking: No. 3 | Scores: 70-72

The 34-year-old Spaniard made the cut after a 1-over 72 on Friday for a 36-hole total of even par. But this position leaves him with very little chance of winning. This wasn't the week he was expecting after a second-place finish last week at Bridgestone.

Henrik Stenson    World Ranking: No. 4 | Scores: 66-71

Justin Rose    World Ranking: No. 5 | Scores: 70-72

A double-bogey at the 12th hole put the former U.S. Open champion in danger of missing the cut, but four birdies coming in carried him into the weekend.

Bubba Watson    World Ranking: No. 7 | Scores: 70-72

Jim Furyk    World Ranking: No. 8 | Scores: 66-68

Jason Day    World Ranking: No. 9 | Scores: 69-65

A front-nine 30 that included an eagle at the seventh hole propelled the 26-year-old Australian to a 6-under 65 on Friday, the low round of the day. At 8-under for the championship, he is 1 shot off the lead heading into the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, he will play in the last group with McIlroy.

Tiger Woods    World Ranking: No. 10 | Scores: 74-74 (MC)

Jordan Spieth    World Ranking: No. 11 | Scores: 71-77 (MC)

Martin Kaymer    World Ranking: No. 12 | Scores: 70-74 (MC)

Phil Mickelson    World Ranking: No. 13 | Scores: 69-67
