Round 1
1. Philadelphia 76ers
Ben Simmons, F, LSU
Chad Ford: Comparing him to Magic Johnson or LeBron James feels like hyperbole, but thinking of him as a bigger, more athletic Draymond Green feels about right. Put the ball in his hands and special things will happen.
2. Los Angeles Lakers
Brandon Ingram, F, Duke
Chad Ford: I was really impressed with how his jumper was coming along. The transition from the college 3 to the NBA line is often challenging, but Ingram seems to be making the move effortlessly.
3. Boston Celtics*
Jaylen Brown, F, California
Chad Ford: If his game can catch up to his physical tools, he'll be very difficult to handle in the NBA. That's a big if, but it's a bet that some teams may be inclined to make.
Brown scouting report | * Acquired from Brooklyn
4. Phoenix Suns
Dragan Bender, F, Croatia
Chad Ford: He has turned himself into a very good shooter. He protects the rim, moves his feet well laterally and, though we didn't see it much at Maccabi, is also an excellent passer.
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
Kris Dunn, PG, Providence
Chad Ford: Dunn's athleticism, defensive ability and floor vision make him the favorite of teams that want an instant-impact point guard who can lock down other opponents and run a team.
6. New Orleans Pelicans
Buddy Hield, SG, Oklahoma
Chad Ford: Hield may be the best shooter in the draft, but the shine from his terrific senior season is beginning to wear off slightly as teams come to grip with the idea that he's undersized (6-foot-5, 212 pounds), he's not an elite athlete and he may be a bit one-dimensional.
7. Denver Nuggets*
Jamal Murray, G, Kentucky
Chad Ford: Murray brings two things to the table that NBA teams are really looking for: shooting (and he was absolutely lights-out shooting the NBA 3 in a workout I saw in New York) and positional versatility.
Murray scouting report | * Acquired from New York
8. Sacramento Kings*
Marquese Chriss, F, Washington
Chad Ford: I'm a big Marquesse Chriss fan and a little surprised he slid to No. 8. I'm even more surprised the Kings would reportedly trade him for No. 13, No. 28, Bogdan Bogdanovic and a 2020 second-rounder. None of those players will have Chriss' upside. For the Suns? Great move. They were debating Chriss versus Bender up until right before the draft. Now they get both. Chriss' athletic ability should allow him to play the 3, at times, next to Bender. I think the Suns got significantly better tonight.
Chriss scouting report | * Traded to Suns
9. Toronto Raptors*
Jakob Poeltl, C, Utah
Chad Ford: Poeltl is the best center prospect in the draft, although in an era of small ball, that doesn't mean as much as it used to. He's very skilled, but his lack of strength and questions about his ability to stretch the floor limit teams' enthusiasm.
Poeltl scouting report | * Acquired from Denver via New York
10. Milwaukee Bucks
Thon Maker, F, Australia
Chad Ford: Maker is the biggest mystery in the draft. He drew strong reviews from teams at a group workout in New York, and the skepticism about him seems to be waning, especially among teams that think his long-term position in the NBA is the 5.
11. Orlando Magic*
Domantas Sabonis, F, Gonzaga
Chad Ford: The Magic are sending Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and the draft rights to the No. 11 pick -- Sabonis -- to the Thunder for Serge Ibaka. I love the trade for the Thunder: An Oladipo-Russell Westbrook backcourt will be very dynamic; and Sabonis has the sort of skill level and strength to play right now. The Magic? I love Ibaka. He fits a need as a stretch 4 who can protect the rim. But the Magic gave up a lot to get him.
Sabonis scouting report | * Traded to Oklahoma City
12. Utah Jazz*
Taurean Prince, F, Baylor
Chad Ford: Prince wasn't ranked in my top 30, but that's not quite as bad as it sounds. There is a lot of parity from Nos. 10 to 35, and Prince is in that tier. He has potential as a 3-and-D guy for the Hawks. With Kent Bazemore hitting free agency, Prince fits a need. I think he has DeMarre Carroll-like upside, but to be honest, in four years at Baylor, Prince was still more about potential than actual production.
Prince scouting report | * Traded to Atlanta
13. Phoenix Suns*
Georgios Papagiannis, C, Greece
Chad Ford: He's a huge big man who can score with his back to the basket but lacks elite athleticism and doesn't have a great motor.
Papagiannis scouting report | * Traded to Kings
14. Chicago Bulls
Denzel Valentine, F, Michigan State
Chad Ford: The Bulls traded their former franchise point guard, Derrick Rose, to the Knicks on Wednesday. Did they draft another one at 14? On the surface, Valentine doesn't seem to be a point guard. He played the wing at Michigan State. But he's one of the best passers in the draft and in the new, position-less NBA, he'll see time at PG, at least on the offensive end. There have been concerns about his knees and what position he defends, but overall this is a really good pick if he can stay healthy. Fits the Bulls perfectly.
15. Denver Nuggets*
Juan Hernangomez, F, Spain
Chad Ford: Since so many teams have multiple picks, draft-and-stash guys are going to be very popular in the 20s and Hernangomez's ability to stretch the floor makes him worthy of a first-round selection.
Hernangomez scouting report | * Acquired from Houston
16. Boston Celtics*
Chad Ford: Yabusele is built like a brick house. He's one of the strongest players in the draft, but he's also skilled. He moves well despite his size and has a shot that goes all the way out to the 3-point line.
Yabusele scouting report | * Acquired from Dallas
17. Memphis Grizzlies
Wade Baldwin IV, G, Vanderbilt
Chad Ford: Baldwin has elite size, length and strength. He's a good shooter and athlete. It's his on-court decision-making and leadership at the point that are issues.
18. Detroit Pistons
Henry Ellenson, F, Marquette
Chad Ford: Ellenson's ability to stretch the floor at his size brings major appeal, although scouts openly question just how great a shooter he really is.
19. Denver Nuggets*
Malik Beasley, G, Florida State
Chad Ford: Beasley is crossing his fingers that in a league that's hungry for elite shooters, teams will look past the fact that he's undersized for a 2-guard and focus on his deep range and athleticism. Working against him? He had surgery just three weeks ago to repair a stress fracture in his right leg.
Beasley scouting report | * Acquired from Portland
20. Indiana Pacers*
Caris LeVert, G, Michigan
Chad Ford: The Michigan senior was once projected as a late-lottery to mid-first-round pick. However, injuries his junior and senior year have taken their toll. NBA teams were hoping that LeVert's leg would be healed enough to participate in the combine.
LeVert scouting report | * Traded to Brooklyn
21. Atlanta Hawks
DeAndre Bembry, F, St. Joseph's
Chad Ford: In a draft filled with 'potential,' there are few players who can actually play the game as well as Bembry can. Next to Ben Simmons, he's the best passing non-point guard in the draft.
22. Charlotte Hornets*
Malachi Richardson, G, Syracuse
Chad Ford: What scouts love most about Richardson is his ability to get his own shot off the bounce. He's one of the few guards in this draft who can really create offense for himself getting to the rim.
Richardson scouting report | * Traded to Sacramento
23. Boston Celtics
Ante Zizic, C, Croatia
Chad Ford: Zizic is one of the sleepers in this draft. He has length, he has athleticism, he has a terrific motor. He has been an absolute elite rebounder in the Balkan League this year. He has the ability to be a terrific NBA prospect down the road.
24. Philadelphia 76ers*
Timothe Luwawu, F, France
Chad Ford: His defensive ability has always been coveted by teams, but he has added a consistent 3-point shot this season that has helped him convince teams he could be a 3-and-D player in the NBA.
Luwawu scouting report | * Acquired from Miami via Cleveland
25. Los Angeles Clippers
Brice Johnson, F, North Carolina
Chad Ford: Johnson's athleticism is his primary calling card. He's bouncy, long and active. He has developed a really nice midrange jumper that he showcased effectively in a June workout in Vegas. Johnson is money from 15 to 20 feet.
26. Philadelphia 76ers*
Furkan Korkmaz, G, Turkey
Chad Ford: Korkmaz is a prototypical NBA 2-guard. He is a good athlete, can shoot the 3 with range and is a very good ball handler and passer.
Korkmaz scouting report | * Acquired from OKC via Denver and Cleveland
27. Toronto Raptors
Pascal Siakam, F, New Mexico State
Chad Ford: Siakam is a very interesting prospect. His rebounding ability is elite. He plays hard and is both a great athlete and physical. He's old for his class and his basketball IQ can be a little low.
28. Phoenix Suns*
Skal Labissiere, C, Kentucky
Chad Ford: His ability to shoot the ball and play in the paint makes him a very attractive option for a team that's willing to take a risk. Whether he has the toughness or feel for the game to be a meaningful contributor in the NBA is very much up for debate.
Labissiere scouting report | * Acquired from Cleveland via Boston
29. San Antonio Spurs
Dejounte Murray, G, Washington
Chad Ford: He's a tough guard with elite size for the position who can get to the basket with a quick first step. He also sees the floor well.
Murray player card, scouting report
30. Golden State Warriors
Damian Jones, C, Vanderbilt
Chad Ford: Blessed with size and elite athleticism, Jones looks the part of an NBA lottery pick. But teams worry about his lack of production at Vanderbilt -- combined with a reputation of being almost too nice.
Round 2
1. (31) Boston Celtics*
Deyonta Davis, F, Michigan State
Chad Ford: Davis has all the physical tools to be a terrific low-post defender in the NBA. Does he have the offensive tools to make him a lottery pick? That's the question right now.
Davis scouting report | * Traded to Memphis
2. (32) Los Angeles Lakers
Ivica Zubac, C, Bosnia
Chad Ford: He's huge. He's a very skilled offensive player. Good footwork. Great hands. High basketball IQ.
Ivica Zubac player card, scouting report
3. (33) Los Angeles Clippers*
Cheick Diallo , F, Kansas
Chad Ford: One of the best motors in the draft. Plays hard on every possession. He has elite length and very good athleticism. Should be able to guard 3s, 4s and 5s in the NBA.
Cheick Diallo player card, scouting report | * Acquired from Brooklyn
4. (34) Phoenix Suns
Tyler Ulis, G, Kentucky
Chad Ford: Ulis may be the best pure point guard in the country. He is super quick, a blur with the ball both laterally and up and down the court. He sees the floor incredibly well, and is an excellent passer and natural leader who rarely makes mistakes. There's only one thing keeping him from being a top-5 pick -- his size (5-10, 149 pounds).
Tyler Ulis player card, scouting report
5. (35) Boston Celtics*
Rade Zagorac, F, Serbia
Chad Ford: I ranked Zagorac ninth among the top 10 international prospects in this year's draft.
Rade Zagorac player card, scouting report | * Traded to Memphis
6. (36) Milwaukee Bucks*
Malcolm Brogdon, G, Virginia
Chad Ford: Brogdon, along with fellow seniors such as Denzel Valentine, has been making the push up the Big Board all season. His play won him ACC Player of the Year and he was slowly getting scouts to concede he might be a late first-round draft prospect. Brogdon's play in the tournament hasn't helped him much, though.
Malcolm Brogdon player card, scouting report | * Acquired from New Orleans via Sacramento
7. (37) Houston Rockets*
Chinanu Onuaku, C, Louisville
* Acquired from New York via Sacramento and Portland
8. (38) Milwaukee Bucks
Patrick McCaw, G, UNLV
9. (39) New Orleans Pelicans*
David Michineau, G, France
* Traded to Los Angeles Clippers
10. (40) New Orleans Pelicans*
Diamond Stone, C, Maryland
* Traded to Los Angeles Clippers
11. (41) Orlando Magic
Stephen Zimmerman Jr., C, UNLV
12. (42) Utah Jazz
Isaiah Whitehead, G, Seton Hall
13. (43) Houston Rockets
Zhou Qi, F, China
14. (44) Atlanta Hawks*
* Acquired from Washington
15. (45) Boston Celtics*
* Acquired from Memphis via Dallas
16. (46) Dallas Mavericks
17. (47) Orlando Magic*
* Acquired from Chicago
18. (48) Chicago Bulls*
* Acquired from Portland via Cleveland
19. (49) Detroit Pistons
20. (50) Indiana Pacers
21. (51) Boston Celtics*
* Acquired from Miami
22. (52) Utah Jazz*
* Acquired from Boston via Memphis
23. (53) Denver Nuggets*
* Acquired from Charlotte via Oklahoma City
24. (54) Atlanta Hawks
25. (55) Brooklyn Nets*
* Acquired from Los Angeles Clippers
26. (56) Denver Nuggets*
* Acquired from Oklahoma City
27. (57) Memphis Grizzlies*
* Acquired from Toronto
28. (58) Boston Celtics*
* Acquired from Cleveland
29. (59) Sacramento Kings*
* Acquired from San Antonio
30. (60) Utah Jazz*
* Acquired from Golden State
