Reds' manager Miley to stay through '05

— -- Cincinnati Reds : Reds manager Dave Miley will have his contract option picked up by the team, and he will keep his coaching staff for another year. Miley agreed in December to a one-year contract to manage Cincinnati through the 2004 season with a club option for 2005. He had a 22-35 record after his midseason promotion to interim manager last year when he replaced Bob Boone, who was fired on July 28, 2003. The Reds entered Monday's game against Houston in fourth place in the NL Central. "I'm very happy for the coaching staff. It's been a lot of hard work all the way from spring training," Miley said Monday. "It shows that they have some trust in us." Also invited to return next year were hitting coach Chris Chambliss, pitching coach Don Gullett, bench coach Jerry Narron, bullpen coach Tom Hume, first base coach Randy Whisler, third base coach Mark Berry and bullpen catcher Mike Stefanski. Miley has been with the Reds organization for 25 years. Before managing the Reds, he spent seven years managing Triple A Louisville and Indianapolis. Detroit Tigers : Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez stayed with his family in Florida because of Hurricane Frances, forcing him to miss Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers returned from Florida on Friday after their Saturday and Sunday games against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were postponed, but Rodriguez stayed in Miami. He was traveling to Detroit on Monday and is expected to be available for Tuesday night's game. Detroit also was without relief ace Ugueth Urbina, who is in Venezuela after the kidnapping of his mother, and third baseman Eric Munson, whose wife went into labor Monday. Atlanta Braves : Braves left-hander Mike Hampton missed his scheduled start Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies because of a stiff neck. Hampton's neck had been bothering him for the past three days, said manager Bobby Cox, who wasn't sure what triggered the pain. "It won't go away," Cox said. "I think it's something he's had on and off his whole career." Travis Smith (0-3) got the start in the opener of a seven-game homestand. Knowing that Hampton might not be available, Cox didn't use Smith in Sunday's 12-inning, 4-3 loss at Montreal. "I held Travis back just for this," the manager said. Hampton (11-9) started the season poorly, but he's gone 9-1 over his last 11 starts. He will continue to receive treatment on his neck and rejoin the rotation when the pain subsides. Chicago Cubs : Catcher Mike DiFelice reported to the Chicago Cubs on Monday, six days after being acquired from the Detroit Tigers. DiFelice, who hit .136 in 13 games for the Tigers, was not in the starting lineup against the Montreal Expos. He is expected to be the primary backup to starter Michael Barrett. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Jason Dubois and right-hander Michael Wuertz and Sergio Mitre from Triple-A Iowa. Dubois hit .316 with 31 home runs and 98 RBIs for Iowa. Wuertz was 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA, and Mitre was 6-4 with a 2.98 ERA. The team also selected the contract of outfielder Calvin Murray from Iowa. He hit .311 with seven homers and 54 RBIs. Right-handed reliever Joe Borowski, sidelined since June 5 with a right shoulder strain, was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. St. Louis Cardinals : Right fielder Larry Walker is expected to miss all of a three-game series at San Diego because of his sprained right knee. Walker was hurt when he slipped fielding a ball near foul territory Sunday in St. Louis, against Los Angeles. The Cardinals are off Thursday, and Walker might return on Friday at Los Angeles. Roger Cedeno started in right against San Diego. San Diego Padres : The Padres recalled outfielder Xavier Nady and right-hander Justin Germano from Triple-A Portland. Nady, called up for the third time this year, started in center field against the Cardinals. He was hitting .330 with 22 homers and 70 RBIs for Portland. Germano is up with the Padres for the second time this season. He was 1-1 with a 6.59 ERA during his first stint, from May 18-June 7. He was 9-5 with a 3.38 ERA in Portland. The Padres sent right-hander Dennis Tankersley and outfielder Freddy Guzman to Portland. Tankersley was 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA in two stints with the Padres. Guzman, who made his big league debut on Aug. 17, hit just .185. Seattle Mariners : The Mariners called up four minor leaguers Monday, completing right-hander Aaron Taylor's comeback from surgery. The 27-year-old Taylor spent most of the season on the disabled list after surgery one year ago to repair a partially torn right rotator cuff. He returned to the mound July 2 with Double-A San Antonio, going 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 37 strikeouts. Taylor is considered a potential closer for the Mariners later in his career. Also called up were infielder Greg Dobbs, infielder Mickey Lopez and outfield prospect Jeremy Reed. To make room for Reed and Lopez on the 40-man roster, the Mariners transferred left-hander Eddie Guardado and right-hander Joel Pineiro from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.
