Round 3 Masters grades

— -- AUGUSTA, Ga. -- All day during the Golfcast, I kept hearing about how surprised everyone was at the great drama on the course even without Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. I have to admit, I was a little worried at first, but that went right out the window with "The World's Most Interesting Man" named Miguel Angel Jimenez shooting 66.

Imagine what Sunday will bring! In the meantime, let's look back at what grades were earned on Moving Day at the Masters.

Adam Scott    World Ranking: No. 2 | Scores: 69-72-76

Four over par after five holes? Wonder what championship gumption tastes like when it comes back up from the belly? And the next person that says that anchored long putter is cheating, I'm gonna show them Adam's 35 putts from Saturday and then knock their teeth out. So much for a repeat champion, although a 67 would go a long way if Mr. Scott could mustard one up.

Henrik Stenson    World Ranking: No. 3 | Scores: 73-72-74

One birdie from the third-ranked player in the world on a day that had a 66 and 67 is unacceptable. The only reason I'm not failing him is because Stenson hit more greens (13) then he has all week. While I am sympathetic to how hard these greens were, I have no sympathy when you rank this high in the world. Maybe you and Adam Scott can switch putters for the day just for giggles? Couldn't hurt.

Jason Day    World Ranking: No. 4 | Scores: 75-73-70

You found a way to your first under-par round of the Masters and you did it with the putter. Twenty eight putts while only hitting 11 greens in regulation is some feat. The question I ask you now is this: Knowing you can't win on Sunday, are you motivated enough to get a top 10? That will take a minimum of 70 again, and it will be harder than the 2-under round you shot Saturday.

Phil Mickelson    World Ranking: No. 5 | Scores: 76-73 -- MC

You know how you said it was "weird" without Tiger? Without Mickelson and Woods on Saturday I thought it was going to be really weird. But you know what? It was actually pretty good. I gave you a chance Friday with a make-up quiz. How did you do? Click here.

Sergio Garcia    World Ranking: No. 6 | Scores: 74-75 -- MC

Garcia looked great on the course Saturday. He was probably in shorts and flip flops, but still. The bad news for Garcia is that he's stuck in the area for a while because he scheduled to do an outing on Monday at a nearby course. You better not bail either! That'd be another grade like yesterday: Click here.

Bubba Watson    World Ranking: No. 12 | Scores: 69-68-74

Winning is hard. And for Bubba, going two days with only three bogeys, well, you knew the golf gods were going to drop the pressure card squarely on his head. Day 1, he had 32 putts but hit 16 greens and the two he missed were a combined 3 feet. Saturday he hit 12 greens yet had 32 putts and at times looked as if he had never putted before in his life. As bad as his day could have been, he still goes into the final round tied for the lead with a chance to win two green jackets in three years.

Jordan Spieth    World Ranking: No. 13 | Scores: 71-70-70

Want to know how much this guy can stand up to "it"? He shot a 62 playing with Phil Mickelson last year and a 63 playing with Tiger Woods (at Torrey Pines!), too. In Round 3 at the Masters, Spieth rocked Adam Scott by six shots. Time for the biggest moment of all in his early professional golf career, but can he handle it? If he wants to wear that jacket, he needs to hit more than eight fairways and 13 greens. It's a big ask for someone so young, but he's stood up proudly so far through those opportunities.

Rory McIlroy    World Ranking: No. 9 | Scores: 71-77-71

This was the hardest grade I've had to give out since I started doing these. So the P is for Pass (we've all had that Pass/Fail class moment). McIlroy goes out Saturday morning first off and has his best putting day of the tournament (30 putts), shoots under par (71), and at least gives himself a chance for a solid finish. Unfortunately ... he got beat by the marker Jeff Knox by a shot! Granted Knox has the course record from the member's tees at 61 and has played as a marker on many occasions. Still, Rory is going to hear about this for a while!
