Sunday NFL preview: Roster cuts are in, but expect more moves soon

— -- NFL Nation reporters look ahead to what Sunday has in store for each team.

AFC EAST

Miami Dolphins: After cutting 22 players, including quarterback Josh Freeman, the Dolphins now turn their attention to the waiver wire. Miami needs depth on the offensive line, particularly at guard and offensive tackle. Left tackles Branden Albert (knee) and Jason Fox (concussions) are still questionable for Week 1. -- James Walker

New England Patriots: Could this be the day we hear from quarterback Tom Brady in a news conference for the first time since Feb. 2? Brady is expected to hold a news conference at some point over the next three days -- it isn't officially locked in at this point -- but it is highly anticipated. Meanwhile, the Patriots practice for the second day in a row in anticipation of Thursday's season-opener against the Steelers. -- Mike Reiss

New York Jets: The Jets are looking to add players from the waiver wire on Sunday. Don't be surprised if they pick up as many as three. They have clear needs: kickoff returner, backup center and tight end. It would be a surprise if they add a veteran quarterback, as they're prepared to play Week 1 with Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Bryce Petty. -- Rich Cimini

AFC NORTH

Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals may not have had too many surprise cuts as they trimmed down their roster Saturday, but they could have some surprise additions to their practice squad Sunday. A lot of that depends upon which players were cut from the other 31 teams. As far as recently cut Bengals who could end up on their practice squad, keep an eye on running backs Terrell Watson and James Wilder Jr., receiver Jake Kumerow, defensive tackle DeShawn Williams and quarterback Keith Wenning. -- Coley Harvey

Cleveland Browns: The Browns will not practice Sunday, but it figures to be a busy day for the front office. The team will scan the waiver wire to see if the Browns can add a veteran quarterback to be the team's third behind Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel, and to see if the Browns can bolster offensive line depth. Final cuts left the team with just six offensive linemen. -- Pat McManamon

Pittsburgh Steelers: Markus Wheaton, the Steelers' No. 2 receiver with Martavis Bryant out, is poised to have an impact in the opener against New England. Wheaton has built a nice rapport with Ben Roethlisberger. He'll be used in the slot and on the outside against the Patriots. -- Jeremy Fowler

AFC SOUTH

Indianapolis Colts: The release of Josh Chapman, who started 15 games last season, means rookie David Parry will likely be the Colts starting nose tackle this season. Parry started the preseason finale against Cincinnati on Thursday. Parry, who the Colts selected in the fifth round, had six tackles in the preseason. -- Mike Wells

Jacksonville Jaguars: Sunday is an important day for Jaguars WR Marqise Lee, who is scheduled to have his hamstring evaluated by strength and conditioning coordinator Tom Myslinski. GM David Caldwell said Lee has a 50-50 shot of playing in the season opener, but that could change based on how Lee's hamstring responds. -- Mike DiRocco

Tennessee Titans: The Titans have the No. 2 pick in the waiver claims order. They kept only four wide receivers, and should be looking for outside linebacker depth upgrades. It would be a surprise if there's not at least one new player Sunday afternoon. -- Paul Kuharsky

AFC WEST

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs left themselves with only eight offensive linemen after the final round of roster moves. If they don't add any help, their depth will be challenged if they get any injuries. It appears only seven of the players will be available when practice resumes next week. The Chiefs were pessimistic that Jeff Allen would be available after he sprained his knee early in the preseason. -- Adam Teicher

Oakland Raiders: With linebacker Sio Moore traded to Indianapolis (for a sixth-round pick), that means both Malcolm Smith and Ray-Ray Armstrong are going to play a lot. It will likely be the most extensive time for both, especially Armstrong who has been mostly a special teamer. The Raiders believe they can handle the load and with Moore gone, they have no choice. -- Bill Williamson

San Diego Chargers: Veteran kicker Nick Novak and tight end John Phillips were surprise cuts as San Diego trimmed down to 53 players on Saturday. The team saves nearly $3 million in cash by not having them on the Week 1 roster. However, the experienced players could be brought back in Week 2 at a lower number with their full 2015 salaries not guaranteed. -- Eric D. Williams

NFC EAST

New York Giants: The Giants have their 53-man roster set, and part of the way they did it was by cutting veterans like Henry Hynoski and Jameel McClain in favor of cheaper options at their positions. That frees up cash and cap space with which the Giants can and will pursue veteran help at safety and on the offensive line in the coming days. -- Dan Graziano

Philadelphia Eagles: The players are off until Tuesday. The Eagles will start signing players to their practice squad Sunday. Don't be surprised to see Raheem Mostert and Rasheed Bailey, return via the practice squad among other players released Saturday. -- Phil Sheridan

Washington Redskins: Now that Robert Griffin III is sticking around, at least for now, there will be interest in how he handles his new position as a backup. Griffin has experience in this role, having been removed from the lineup each of the past two seasons. During those times, Griffin kept a low profile. Last week, one coach said he complimented Griffin for how he responded in the days after learning he was benched. -- John Keim

NFC NORTH

Detroit Lions: The Detroit Lions have made their 53-man roster cuts but this doesn't mean they are close to done with moves. They'll likely be scanning the waiver wire for potential claims -- and both offensive and defensive lines could be places they will look. Offensive tackle is a spot where the franchise could try to upgrade the No. 4 spot and the team will always be looking for more defensive linemen. They'll also be putting together their initial practice squad, and players such as safeties Isaiah Johnson and Brian Suite along with tight end Casey Pierce are players to look at there. It'll be interesting to see if the team tries to put quarterback Kellen Moore on the practice squad, too, after releasing him Saturday. -- Michael Rothstein

Green Bay Packers: Will GM Ted Thompson look to add to the receiver group? If he does, the most likely candidate is former Packers receiver James Jones, who was cut by the New York Giants on Saturday. However, it wouldn't be surprising if Thompson stuck with the group he has now. It's not typically Thompson's M.O. to go after free agents -- Rob Demovsky

Minnesota Vikings: After finalizing their roster on Saturday, the Vikings will set their practice squad, and could still look to make a few moves on Sunday. They've added several players to their roster after the final roster cuts each of the past two seasons, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the team pick up another player or two that was released by another team on Saturday. At present, the Vikings have only five cornerbacks on the roster, with Jabari Price suspended. -- Ben Goessling

NFC SOUTH

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers will be looking hard at released players at cornerback and wide receiver to round out the bottom of the roster. Cornerback, in particular, could be a need. The team kept only four on Saturday when rosters were reduced to 53. Starter Josh Norman (concussion) and backup Teddy Williams (groin) are dealing with injuries that potentially could keep them out of the opener, although the decision to keep four might be a sign there is no major concern. -- David Newton

New Orleans Saints: The Saints will likely add another receiver at some point since they went with only four on their original 53-man roster on Saturday. Maybe they'll bring back one of the players they cut ( Seantavius Jones, Joseph Morgan and Josh Morgan). But it bodes well for undrafted second-year receivers Brandon Coleman and Willie Snead that they were among the four who remained on the roster. They were two of the breakout stars of the summer -- and now it looks like they'll both have prominent chances to contribute this year. -- Mike Triplett

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The decision to keep four tailbacks and a fullback was one of the more interesting moves as the team trimmed its roster to 53 players. Assuming the Bucs don't have a change of heart, the pecking order is pretty clear. Doug Martin will be the starting tailback and Jorvorskie Lane will be the fullback. Charles Sims will be the top backup to Martin and likely will be used as a situational pass-catcher. Bobby Rainey is a capable backup and special teams player. Mike James could end up being a short-yardage and goal-line specialist. -- Pat Yasinskas

NFC WEST

St. Louis Rams: Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced Saturday that rookie running back Todd Gurley (knee) will not play in the opener against Seattle next week. He also said running back Tre Mason is doing better in his recovery from a hamstring injury. But the Rams will have to monitor Mason this week and that means there will probably be a lot of work for third-string back Benny Cunningham. The Rams have already started game planning for Seattle, a difficult chore that has gotten tougher with the continued uncertainty at running back. -- Nick Wagoner

San Francisco 49ers: The initial 53-man roster intact, the Niners do not report as a team until Monday at their Santa Clara facility. It's a day, then, for the likes of heretofore roster longshots, such as Jarryd Hayne, DeAndrew White and Mike Purcell, to reflect and prepare for the start of the real season. -- Paul Gutierrez

Seattle Seahawks: Look for the team to officially announce it has signed Fred Jackson to a one-year contract. The Seahawks cut down to 53 on Saturday and kept five running backs on their roster. It's likely that one of their fullbacks -- Will Tukuafu or Derrick Coleman -- is let go today. Another possibility is halfback Thomas Rawls. -- Sheil Kapadia
