Woman Hit in Head With Bat at Fenway Park Remains in Serious Condition

— -- A woman hit in the head by a bat at Fenway Park on Friday night remains in serious condition.
The woman, identified on Saturday by her family as Tonya Carpenter, was sitting in one of the first few rows when she was hit during the game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. The incident happened when Brett Lawrie of the A's broke his bat during the second inning.
"It was violent," witness Alex Merlis said. "She bled a lot. A lot. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that."
Carpenter suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.
"Tonya's family and loved ones are grateful to all who have reached out with thoughts and prayers but are requesting privacy at this time as Tonya recovers," read a statement from her family.
Carpenter is expected to survive, Officer Rachel McGuire of the Boston police confirmed to ABC News.
The Red Sox said in a statement Saturday: "A woman was injured by a broken bat that flew into the stands in the top of the second inning of last night's game. The fan was immediately transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she is being treated. All of us offer our prayers and our thoughts as we wish her a speedy recovery."
