Competitive performance; lengthy battery life; great MacBook-like flat keyboard; bloatware kept to relative minimum.

Media control keys look a bit outdated.

Though it doesn't stand out in any one area, the Sony Vaio CR510E covers all the bases--decent performance, long battery life, good size, affordable price--in forming a good bet as a back-to-school laptop.
