Why Virgin Galactic Ticket Holder Still Wants to Go to Space With Leonardo DiCaprio
Businessman paid $1.5 million for ticket to space with Leonardo DiCaprio.
-- Sometime in the next few years, a Russian millionaire hopes to have some zero gravity fun with Leonardo DiCaprio when the two take a trip on board a Virgin Galactic spacecraft.
Vasily Klyukin, who founded a bank and manages a real estate fund, paid $1.5 million at am amfAR charity gala last year for the opportunity to travel to space with the Hollywood A-lister.
The Monaco-based businessman said the disintegration of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo over the Mojave Desert in California last week isn't going to deter him from seeing the stars.
"My plans of flying into space haven't changed and I'm still going to do it with Virgin," Klyukin, 38, told ABC News in an email today.
While Klyukin said he has full confidence in the company's safety testing, he doesn't feel the need to race to space. Of the few hundred known ticket holders, Klyukin said his turn is "in the middle of the list."
"The conquest of space is not a trip to the movies or something like that, therefore nobody is in a hurry," he said.
When the day arrives that Klyukin, DiCaprio and other space tourists can blast off, he believes the spacecraft will be no more dangerous "than an ordinary airplane."
"Now I'm just waiting," he said. "I still dream to go to space."
