Activists Taking to the Streets to Fight Climate Change

— -- Organizers for the People's Climate March in New York City are hoping the demonstration will influence the United Nation's summit on climate change.

"The goal of the march is to show world leaders something needs to be done," said Negesti Cantave, a field organizer for Sunday's march. "There needs to be a call to action."

The march is scheduled two days before a United Nations summit on climate change. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will host the 2014 climate summit on Sept. 23.

World leaders from governments and international environmental and business industries are expected to attend, according to the United Nations' website.

Cantave could not say how many people are expected to turn out for Sunday's march, but she advises attendees to arrive early and to bring plenty of water.

"It's going to be pretty crowded," she said.

People who want to participate should meet at 86th Street and Central Park West at 10 a.m., according to Cantave.

The parade will stop at 11th Avenue and 34th Street. There a block party will allow marchers to listen to music, eat food, and speak to local community representatives.

"The march will kick off an entire week of action," Cantave said.

Events on the impact of climate change are scheduled to take place throughout New York City and other international cities.
