— -- The police officer who was injured while responding to the horrific shooting at a Chattanooga military installation is "doing well," his family said in a statement.

After Pedigo was hit by gunfire, his colleagues pulled him to safety "while continuing to return fire," local police said.

"Dennis Pedigo is doing well, he is in good spirits, he and the family would like to thank the community for their thoughts and prayers," the family said in a statement, tweeted by the Chattanooga Police Department. "Our family’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Marines that lost their lives yesterday."

Pedigo was among three people injured by the gunman, who was killed in the firefight, according to a U.S. official. Also wounded was a sailor who remained hospitalized. Another Marine was treated and released.
