Councilman Tased by Cop in Texas Town Where Sandra Bland Was Arrested
An officer in this incident was also involved in Bland's arrest, police said.
-- A councilman was reportedly hit with a stun gun by a police officer after a confrontation outside his home in Prairie View, Texas -- the same town where Sandra Bland was arrested this summer before she died in a jail cell.
The encounter took place Thursday night outside Prairie View Councilman Jonathan Miller's home, ABC station KTRK-TV in Houston reported.
Video shot by a friend of Miller and obtained by KTRK-TV shows officers telling the 26-year-old councilman to put his hands behind his back.
Miller does not move his arms.
A female officer then says, "He's going to have to tase you." A male officer then uses a stun gun on Miller, who falls to the ground.
Miller's friends told KTRK they were hanging out at the house when several of them went outside to change their shoes. Police pulled up and asked what they were doing, said the friends, and Miller came out to check on them.
The Prairie View Police Department did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment today, but in a statement released Friday and obtained by KTRK, the police said: "After repeated commands to step back, Mr. Miller was told that he was being placed under arrest for interfering with the investigation. Once officers attempted to arrest Miller, he physically resisted. Mr. Miller continued to resist, even after repeated commands to stop."
In the recording, Miller tells police he lives there.
Miller was booked Friday by the Prairie View Police Department on charges of interfering with public duties and resisting arrest, search or transport, according to jail records. He was released Friday on $1,000 personal recognizance bond, records showed.
Miller did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The female officer seen in Miller's video was also involved in Bland's arrest, police said, according to KTRK.
In July, Sandra Bland, 28, was arrested after a traffic stop in Prairie View. Authorities alleged that she was "argumentative and uncooperative."
In cell phone video of the arrest -- which was posted to YouTube -- Bland can be heard questioning officers’ tactics, accusing them of slamming her to the ground.
She was found dead in her jail cell three days later.
Bland's mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Assistant Attorney General Seth Byron Dennis said last month that prosecutors could submit findings of the investigation into Bland's arrest to a Waller County grand jury "probably mid to late October" to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
Bland, who lived in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, graduated from Prairie View A&M University and was planning to move back to Texas.
According to his city council page, Miller is also a graduate of Prairie View A&M University.
