Dad Faints Upon Learning He’ll Have a Son After 4 Daughters
Julio Pena fainted upon learning his baby’s gender.
-- Julio Pena and his wife have four daughters, but when he found out he was finally going to have a baby boy, it was all too much for him. He fainted.
Pena, 38, of Mastic Beach, N.Y., got the news at a gender reveal party for his fifth child on Jan. 17. He and his wife, Kari, had wanted the gender to be a surprise to them so they had their doctor reveal the baby’s gender in a sealed envelope -– which they didn’t open -– and also gave the doctor permission to disclose the gender to their 16-year-old daughter, Chastity.
Chastity was the one who ordered the cake, which under the icing, would be either pink, to denote a baby girl, or blue, for a baby boy.
Video posted to YouTube on Jan. 20 shows Julio and Kari standing in front of a cake while family and friends chanted in encouragement, "It’s a boy! It’s a boy!”
When they finally cut into the cake and saw that it was indeed blue, the room erupted in screaming and Pena, 38, was overcome. He went weak in the knees and sank to the floor, telling ABC News in a Tuesday interview: “It was like I collapsed and fainted at the same time.”
Pena, who works at a transportation company, had longed for a son.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. For a boy,” he said, adding that after he fell, “they had to sit me down in the sofa and I couldn’t say anything. I was like in shock.”
Kari Pena, 35, says her husband was “already shaky” before the cake cutting.
“He was so nervous. He was like ... he was dying for a boy forever,” she said.
Their son is due in June. In addition to Chastity, the couple are parents to daughters Christalyn, 13, Nayalyn, 8, and Nakayla, 7.
