Flash Flooding Leaves Hawaii Travelers Scrambling to Safety

An ATV tour turned into an all-day ordeal for the travelers.

— -- Jill Bolstridge and her fellow travelers expected to take a three-hour ATV tour on Hawaii’s Big Island Monday, but flash flooding turned the trip into an all-day ordeal.

The weather started getting rough while the group swam between two waterfalls, taking out a bridge they needed to escape.

Bolstridge and her friend William Quilty, along with half their tour group, were stranded near the top of a raging waterfall, cold and wet.

The group waited for hours, climbing trees to avoid the surging water.

A rescue helicopter eventually arrived, lifting everyone to safety.
