George Zimmerman: 911 Calls Released in Florida Shooting Incident
Police released what witnesses saw during the Florida shooting.
-- In a dramatic 911 call released today from a shooting involving a man firing his gun at George Zimmerman, a caller told a police dispatcher that "a guy just said he had to pull a gun on a guy."
The caller explained to the operator that the "guy" -- referring to the alleged shooter Matthew Apperson -- said "he had to shoot at someone through his window so he wants the police to come. ... He said it was George Zimmerman."
On Monday, a police officer in Lake Mary, Florida was flagged down by Zimmerman, who said someone had fired at him while he was in his car, according to a statement from the Lake Mary Police Department.
At the same time, someone called 911 on behalf of Apperson, reporting that he had said he shot Zimmerman, police said.
Apperson looked "visibly shaken" in the aftermath of the shooting, according to a man who called 911 after the incident.
Bystander Ken Cornell said a man -- who identified himself to police as Apperson -- came up to him, screaming, "Please call 911. ... I just shot George Zimmerman."
Zimmerman was hospitalized with minor injuries and later released, according to police.
Two handguns were recovered in Apperson's car as a result of a search warrant, police said today.
Police did say that a .357 revolver -- one of two guns found in Apperson's car -- was used to fire at Zimmerman because it has an expended shell casing.
Police do know know what sparked the shooting, but authorities have said that both Apperson and Zimmerman were involved in a previous incident in 2014.
Apperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, said his client was driving into a retail center when a car came up behind him, flashing its lights and honking. Zimmerman claimed the other driver yelled at him, West said.
When Zimmerman tried to leave, West said, the other driver pulled up and fired a shot through the passenger side window of Zimmerman's truck. The bullet lodged somewhere in the car, West said. According to West, the other driver fled.
Zimmerman had a gun in the car but did not brandish it, according to West. Zimmerman was carrying the gun legally, the attorney said.
Over the course of the investigation, "Zimmerman's glock handgun was recovered," police said today.
Police also confirmed today at a news conference that a gun was recovered from Zimmerman and that he legally owned it.
The police's investigation is ongoing. Police said today it is not known if charges will be filed.
In 2012, Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Florida prosecutors tried to convict Zimmerman of state-level murder and manslaughter charges, but in July 2013 a jury acquitted him, saying prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to prove their case.
