8 Killed, 36 Injured in Weekend of Gun Violence in Chicago Overshadowed by Orlando Shooting

The violence in Chicago was overshadowed by the carnage in Orlando.

The violence erupted between 8 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday. Among those shot was a 5-year-old girl, a Chicago Police Department spokesperson said.

The young girl was on a sidewalk with a 34-year-old woman in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side on Friday night when someone emerged from an alley and opened fire. The girl was hit in the foot and the woman was struck in her left ankle, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Although wounded, the woman drove them to a nearby hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police told the Sun-Times. The girl was transferred to another hospital in good condition. It was not immediately clear if they were the targets of the shooting.
