The small plane crashed near Hammond.
-- Two people were killed when a small plane crashed Wednesday while taking off at a Louisiana airport, officials said.
The twin-engine Cessna went down at the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport just before 4 p.m., according to the office of the mayor of Hammond.
"At this time we are asking for prayers for the family and friends of the victims involved and for all of the first responders that arrived here today," the mayor's office said. "Our hearts are heavy as we investigate the events that lead to this tragic incident."
It's not clear what caused the crash, but the NTSB will be investigating, the mayor's office said.
