Man Arrested for Sexually Assaulting Amish Girl 'Gifted' to Him, Police Say
Police said the Amish parents "gifted" their 14-year-old to the suspect.
-- A Pennsylvania man was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a teenage Amish girl who police say was gifted to him and that he fathered two children with her.
Twelve girls ranging in age between 6 months and 18 years were found in the home of suspect, Lee Kaplan, 51, in Feasterville, Thursday, after an anonymous caller tipped off authorities, according to the Lower Southampton Police Department.
Police say four years ago the parents of several of the children "gifted" their now 18-year-old daughter, who was 14 at the time, to Kaplan after he bailed the family out of debt.
The victim lived with her mother and father in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, before the family was kicked out of the Amish community for reasons unknown, police said.
The teen had two children with Kaplan, and the remaining nine children -- her siblings -- lived with her and Kaplan as well as her parents.
Kaplan and the victim's parents are being held on $1 million bail each at the Bucks County Jail. Kaplan was charged with two felony counts of statuary sexual assault, two felony counts of aggravated indecent assault, two felony counts of corruption of minors, two felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor and two misdemeanor accounts of indecent assault of a person less than 16 years of age, according to court documents.
The victim's father, who was not named, is charged with conspiracy to commit endangering the welfare of a child, criminal conspiracy of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. The victim's mother, also unnamed, is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Police are continuing to conduct interviews with the children, but are having to get help from the Amish community in Lancaster because the children have been sheltered, according to authorities. It is unclear if any of the children were held against their will and their conditions were unclear.
It is unclear if Kaplan has obtained a lawyer or entered a plea. He had not posted bail as of Thursday.
