Maryland Cop Dies in Shooting at Police Headquarters
Two people in custody after active-shooter alert in Maryland.
-- The police officer who was critically injured in a shooting this evening at the Prince George’s County Police Department headquarters died after what authorities called an unprovoked attack on the station.
Prince George’s County Officer Jacai Colson, 28, was a four-year veteran who was shot during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect after the individual allegedly opened fire on the Landover, Maryland, station, PGPD Chief Hank Stawinski told reporters tonight.
The arrested suspect was also shot, and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the same hospital where the officer died. The officers had not engaged the suspect in any way before the shooting, the chief added.
Stawinski also said a second person was arrested and was being interrogated.
"We do not believe there are outstanding suspects but investigation is in early stages," the department tweeted earlier.
Police had previously said there was a possible active shooter, or shooters, and advised residents to stay indoors and avoid the area.
The FBI said its field office based in Baltimore is assisting in the response.
