South African Golfer Charl Schwartzel Wins Masters Tournament
Even Colo the gorilla didn't predict this one.
April 10, 2011 -- Both Colo the gorilla and Good Morning America viewers chose Tiger Woods to win the 2011 Masters Tournament, but South African Charl Schwartzel just captured the title.
Schwartzel, 26, won the 75th Masters Tournament after taking the lead from Australian Adam Scott, becoming the third South African to win the Masters -- following Gary Player and Trevor Immelman. It is Schwartzel's first major title. We'll have to check in with Colo to see what the future has in store for him.
Scott and fellow Australian Jason Day tied for second place at 12 under after playing together on the final day, while four-time champion Woods came in fourth place.
Colo, 54, is the oldest gorilla in the world, according to the Columbus Zoo, where she was born. But even this veteran predicter of major sporting events couldn't have predicted that Schwartzel, a relatively unknown South African golfer, would win.
After Colo the gorilla correctly picked the University of Connecticut Huskies as the winner of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, "Good Morning America" challenged the primate prognosticator to pick the champion of the Masters golf tournament.
"GMA's" favorite psychic gorilla chose Tiger Woods to win the Masters from her home at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday.
Colo chose Woods, the four-time Masters champion, over defending champion Phil Mickelson, Martin Kaymer, who currently is the No. 1-ranked player in the world, and the rest of the player field.
