Member of Navy Arrested, Charged With Attempted Rape: San Diego Police

— -- A member of the Navy was arrested and charged with attempted rape, allegedly of another member of the service, according to the San Diego Police Department.

A neighbor placed a 911 call to police Monday around 3 a.m., telling police that he heard screaming coming from the victim's home, police said. When the neighbor approached the home, he told police he heard what he believed to be a struggle. The neighbor then asked the victim if she was OK, to which she replied "no," police said.

After the neighbor called 911, he yelled through the window that police were on their way, police said.

When officers arrived, the neighbor alerted them to a man running out of the victim's backyard, police said. Officers weer able to apprehend the man in a canyon area near the victim's home.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old John Neuhart, and an initial investigation revealed that Neuhart and the victim are acquaintances, as well as both being members of the U.S. Navy, police said.

The victim was with friends at downtown San Diego hotel when she recognized Neuhart and talked for a period of time, police said. Neuhart went with the victim when she left the bar and followed her into her home, police said.

Neuhart then allegedly attempted to sexual assault the victim, but she fought him off, police said. He was charged with one count of attempted rape by force and one count of assault with intent to rape.

ABC News could not immediately reach Neuhart for comment, and it is unclear if he has obtained a lawyer.

The Navy did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.
