Minke Whale Washes Up on NYC Beach

Reports of the whale came around noon on Monday.

— -- A Minke whale washed up on the shores of Coney Island this afternoon in New York, according to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

The Riverhead Foundation was notified of the whale around noon and has a team member on the way to examine it.

“We’re not sure why the whale washed up since it always depends on the situation," Rachel Bosworth told ABC News today.

“Each whale’s cause of death has different reasons, whether it’s because of humans, because of pollution or if it was struck by a boat,” she added.

The Foundation is hoping to determine the whale’s age and cause of death upon examination.
