Moments of remembrance: The 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks

— -- People around the country took time Monday to remember the thousands who died in the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Today, our entire nation grieves with you and with every family of those 2,977 innocent souls who were murdered by terrorists 16 years ago," President Donald Trump said outside the National 9/11 Memorial while presiding over his first 9/11 commemoration ceremony.

Here are some of the most poignant images from the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks:

In Shankesville, Pennsylvania, a man looks at names on the wall at the Flight 93 National Memorial, which is at the site where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed after it was hijacked by terrorists who where then overtaken by the plane's passengers, which prevented the hijackers from reaching their target.

At the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum in downtown New York City, people looked at the names of the victims engraved above the recessed pools where the Twin Towers once stood.

James Taormina, whose brother Dennis Taormina was killed in the attacks, was seen standing by the 9/11 Memorial North Pool on Tuesday before a ceremony took place there.

A New York City firefighter was seen saluting the 9/11 memorial wall that was erected for the 343 firefighters who were killed.

Someone placed a flower at the North Pool during the commemoration ceremony on Monday.

On Sunday, a couple was seen embracing on the Brooklyn Promenade as the Tribute in Light rose above the skyline of lower Manhattan.
