Pitcher Kris Benson's Wife Accused of Trapping Him in Basement With Handgun, Taser, Hatchet
Police say Anna Benson broke in wearing bulletproof vest and trapped husband.
July 11, 2013 -- The estranged wife of former Major League Baseball pitcher Kris Benson was arrested earlier this week after she allegedly broke into her husband's Georgia home wearing a bulletproof vest and was armed with an ammunition belt, knife, Taser, hatchet and a handgun, according to police.
Anna Benson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and battery with a gun, possession of a firearm in a felony and criminal trespass after she allegedly broke into the home the couple once shared in Smyrna, Ga., Monday.
Anna Benson, 37, is being held without bond by Cobb County. It's unclear whether she has a lawyer.
Kris Benson, 38, dialed 911 from his basement and told the 911 operator in a hushed voice that his wife threatened him with a gun.
"My soon to be ex-wife has gotten into my house … She's brandishing a gun," Benson said.
Police say Anna Benson was also carrying an expandable baton along with the other weapons and dressed in black attire.
"She's wearing a bulletproof vest," the former pitcher told 911. "She's in the house and I'm downstairs in the basement."
Police say Benson told them he was able to get away from his wife by telling her he would go find a lighter so she could have a cigarette.
Anna Benson, a former Penthouse model, allegedly told police she was wearing a bulletproof vest to test it for a company.
Kris Benson filed for divorce last summer and already has received primary custody of their children. The judge granted Kris Benson full custody of the children, revoked Anna Benson's visitation rights and issued an emergency restraining order against her following her arrest.
The couple made headlines during Benson's time with the New York Mets when Anna Benson dressed as a sexy Mrs. Claus during the team's Christmas party. Benson again made headlines when she told Howard Stern in a 2004 interview that if her husband ever cheated on her, she would sleep with the whole team as retaliation.
Benson also stated her love of guns in the same interview.
"I have them everywhere, I love them," Benson told Stern. "Kris has a bunch, but all rifles that I don't even know what they are but I prefer my Glock and my .45."
Benson was featured on VH1's "Baseball Wives" reality-TV show in 2011.
In a jailhouse interview with the New York Post after her arrest, Benson reportedly said, "I'm a good girl, a nice girl… I would never hurt [Kris]. I am still in love with him."
Kris Benson pitched for nine seasons; from 1999 to 2010 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Ranges and Arizona Diamondbacks.
