Police Officer Shot in Head Leads to Texas Standoff
SWAT team, hostage negotiators surround San Antonio motel.
Sept. 9, 2013 -- Scores of SWAT team members, some wearing flak jackets and carrying machine guns, have surrounded a San Antonio Motel 8 in a tense standoff with a man suspected of shooting a police officer in the head, law enforcement officials said.
The alleged gunman, who is believed to be in his 30s, is believed to have at least one firearm, said Sandy Gutierrez, San Antonio police spokeswoman.
Officer Aaron Terrazas responded to a disturbance call just before 8 o'clock this morning. When the officer arrived at the room, the suspect shot him through the door, police said.
Police described the officer's injury as "nonlife threatening," and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Terrazas is an eight-year veteran of the force, police said.
"We're trying to negotiate with the suspect. We're trying to end this peacefully," Gutierrez told ABC News.com, saying it did not know what demands the gunman might have, if any.
The motel, along with two local schools, was evacuated. Several roads, including parts of Highway I-35, have been closed off to traffic.
