— -- Whether you’re a fan of the Philly cheesesteak or a connoisseur of the chicken sandwich, there is no doubt that there is a sandwich out there for everyone.

Luckily for sandwich lovers, Nov. 3 is National Sandwich Day and sandwich shops across the country are celebrating by offering discounts, new recipes and even free food.

National Sandwich Day is observed on the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is credited with inventing the delicious treat.

According to Food Timeline, the sandwich as we know it today came to be because of Montagu’s fondness for card games. In 1762, Montagu was on a 24-hour gambling streak and requested a meal that he could eat without utensils or having to use both hands. His cook prepared sliced meat placed between two pieces of toast, and thus, the sandwich was born.
