Blond Hair, Blue Eyes, Undisclosed Sum of Cash
Austin police are looking for a woman suspected of robbing a bank with a smile.
May 8, 2007 -- Police in Austin, Texas, are searching for a woman caught smiling for a surveillance camera as she robbed a Wachovia Bank branch Monday afternoon.
The suspect, a woman with a blond ponytail and an identity hidden only by a low-slung University of Texas Longhorns hat, is described by police as about 5 feet 2 inches tall, in her late 20s, with shoulder-length hair and blue eyes.
The woman entered the bank branch in the northwest part of the city just before 1 p.m. and demanded cash from the bank teller, according to police. She was wearing a red shirt and stone-washed jeans.
The woman fled on foot and police, per department policy, would not say how much money she stole in the hit.
It's the fifth bank robbery of 2007 in Austin, but the first involving a female suspect.
"In Austin, we're fortunate we don't see a whole lot of bank robberies," said Austin police spokesman Kevin Buchman. "And it does make it even more rare to have a female involved."
Detectives continue to investigate, interviewing the tellers and branch manger and reviewing surveillance footage.
Buchman said they have not determined whether the suspect is one of the thousands of students who live in the Austin area and attend the University of Texas.
"We haven't ruled out anything," said Buchman.
