Hasbro Reissues Easy-Bake Oven Recall
Hasbro reissues consumer alert after weak response to first recall.
July 19, 2007 -- Six months after dozens of serious injuries prompted the recall of nearly a million Easy-Bake Ovens, the toy company Hasbro is reissuing the consumer alert because too few peopled heeded it the first time.
The original recall in February followed more than two dozen reports of children getting their hands and fingers stuck in the oven -- some suffering severe burns.
Since that time, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, only a small number of ovens have been returned and the company has received reports of nearly 250 more incidents of children getting their hands or fingers caught in the ovens. The first recall was prompted by just 29 incidents.
Of the incidents reported since February, 77 involved burns -- including 16 second- and third-degree burns. One burn required the partial amputation of a 5-year-old girl's finger.
At the time of the first recall, Pattie Davis of the CPSC urged parents to abide by the age recommendations for the toy ovens.
"The most important thing when you are using this Easy-Bake Oven is that it's intended for children 8 years and older," Davis said. "Don't let a younger child use this. That's where we see a lot of the injuries."
The latest CPSC alert says the recalled models are purple and pink model number 65805. They were made in China and sold after May 2006 at Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart, Target and other major retailers.
Consumers are urged to take the products away from children immediately. Consumers are urged to contact Hasbro at 1-800-601-8148 and return the oven for a voucher that can be used to get a free product that is of equal value -- about $25.
