Drag Queen Giving Motorists Unusual Show
Maine authorities fear man who parades for female drivers could cause accident.
Feb. 8, 2008 -- Female motorists in Maine face a bizarre road hazard.
A moustachioed man who likes to dress in kinky women's clothing is blocking cars driven by women on single-lane roads, and then jumping out to model his outfit.
Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion has counted at least six complaints since April of similar incidents on typically quiet roads near Portland, Maine. In each instance — the most recent on Feb 3. — the man slows down and partially pulls off the road, stopping the car behind him.
"This gentleman jumps out of his car dressed in a camisole, women's thigh-high stockings and black high-heeled boots," Dion told ABC News. "He only jumps out when he sees a car driven by a woman. It's kind of unsettling."
In the last instance, a woman told authorities that the man tried to run her off the road, cutting her off before pulling to the side of the road to engage in his "act."
Dion has put out a composite drawing of the cross-dressing driver.
"We have to prevent a potential accident here," Dion said. "If he was wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt and he was jumping out in the road this way, we'd still be looking for him."
Dion said that the man's behavior was so unusual, it shouldn't be hard for someone to recognize him.
"Given it's not a huge demography he's selecting to play in, we're hoping locals will recognize him," he said. "It's a recognizable face."
Initially authorities believed that the reports may have involved some sort of college prank or fraternity hazing, but they began taking the reports more seriously as they mounted. The release of the sketch, which triggered a wave of tips, also prompted additional reports of similar confrontations, authorities said.
For now, Dion said, they are calling the man a "person of interest" rather than a "suspect" because there may not be any crime involved in the man's behavior.
"In Maine, the law says you have to expose genitals for [indecent exposure]," he said, adding that a prosecutor may be able to bring some type of obstructing a public way charge. Regardless, he said, they just want the man to cut out the behavior before he causes a crash.
In addition to his cross-dressing "uniform," the man is described as a white male with brown hair and a moustache. He is roughly 5 feet 11 inches tall and about 30 years old.
He has been linked by witnesses to both a black sedan and a red pickup truck, possibly a Toyota.
